Aggrieved customers of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) in the Ketu South Municipality are planning a peaceful demonstration on September 1, 2026, over what they describe as persistent overbilling, estimated bills and delays in fixing faulty meters.
Convener of the group, Edem Mensah Viglo, told the media that customers had endured outrageous estimated bills issued without actual meter readings, unexplained overcharging, delays in repairing or replacing faulty meters, and inadequate responses to complaints lodged with ECG.
“Our demonstration is under the theme ‘Enough Is Enough! Stop the Over-Billing Now!’: we are calling for immediate action to ensure that electricity bills are based strictly on accurate meter readings, for those who have been wrongly charged to receive appropriate adjustments to their accounts,” he said.
Viglo said the group was demanding greater transparency and accountability from ECG in its billing processes, along with respect for the rights of electricity consumers in the municipality.
He said the demonstration would begin at Denu Junction, and participants would proceed to the Ketu South Municipal Assembly then to the ECG office in Denu to formally present their grievances.
“The over-billing had led to the collapse of many personal businesses in the area; it has also contributed to a rise in the unemployment rate within the Municipality, since many cannot afford the high bills by ECG,” Viglo said.
He said the Municipal Assembly, ECG and other relevant authorities had been notified about the situation previously, but no meaningful action had followed.
He cited cases of households allegedly receiving bills despite being disconnected for months, and homes with minimal appliances, such as a single bulb, being billed between GHC2,000 and GHC5,000.
He added that some customers had been billed close to GHC20,000 within a few months.
Viglo further noted that security agencies had been notified about the planned demonstration to help maintain peace and order.
The organisers have called on concerned citizens, electricity consumers and residents of the municipality to join the demonstration peacefully, saying the protest was about more than electricity bills, touching also on justice, dignity, accountability and consumer rights.
Meanwhile, Minister for Energy and Green Transition, Dr John Abdulai Jinapor, has announced plans for an independent investigation into complaints of alleged overbilling and faulty meters in some Volta Region communities, including Keta. He said the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission and the Energy Commission would carry out the investigation, following complaints raised by residents against the power distributor.
