John Jinapor, a former Deputy Minister of Energy under the erstwhile John Dramani Mahama administration has thrown a challenge to people who say he was against the tariff reduction announced by President Akufo-Addo in 2018 to provide proof.

President Akufo-Addo announced an average of 14% reduction in electricity tariffs for non-residential users in Ghana in January 2018.
“From January this year, the non-residential tariff rate, which is the rate which includes all of you here, is being reduced by an average of 14%. For barbers, it is being reduced by 18%; for hairdressers and beauticians, 15.7%, and for tailors, 9.8%,” he noted.

After the announcement, Mr Jinapor is said to have kicked against the tariff reduction.
But, speaking on Okay FM, he said he did not at any point in time reject the tariff reduction but had a problem with the President announcing it.
“I’m challenging anybody listening to produce a proof of evidence to show the instance where I said I won’t accept that tariff reduction,” he stated on Okay FM, monitored by Adomonline.com.
He argued that the President’s announcement breached the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission’s (PURC) Act 853.
He added that it is the work of the PURC to declare issues on tariff increment and reduction and not the President.
