Former Member of Parliament (MP) for Bantama, Mr Henry Kwabena Kokofu, says the Minority in Parliament’s boycott of New Patriotic Party (NPP) Member of Parliament (MP) for Ayawaso West Wuogon constituency, Lydia Seyram Alhassan was very unprecedented.
According to the politician, there are procedures in the law the Minority could use to address the issue rather than rejecting her participation in Parliament.
“Their action is very unprecedented. It has never happened in the history of Ghana that someone has been elected and sworn into Parliament and has been ignored by a Minority in Parliament, this is very condemnable.

“Boycotting in Parliament is one of the procedures you take when you don’t agree with something in Parliament but this particular case is different, not when they have not taken the case to court for the right procedure.
“They haven’t done that so she remains the MP for Ayawaso West Wuogon constituency and has been sworn-in by Parliament and you say you will not accept her contributions and her work as a Member of Parliament, then it is very worrying and very condemnable,” he noted.
Speaking as a panel on Adom TV’s morning show Badwam, he stated that the leadership of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) should speak to their MPs in Parliament before it gets out of hand.

“NDC as a political party must sit with their Minority caucus on this issue because I foresee this causing trouble when it is not dealt with,” he predicted.
The Minority in Parliament on Monday ignored and refused to comment on a statement made by the NPP MP for Ayawaso West Wuogon constituency.
The norm in the House is that a Minority member makes a statement after a Majority member has put an issue before the House.
The NPP MP, after being sworn-in on February 5, 2019, a ceremony which was boycotted by the Minority in Parliament, gave her maiden statement in commemoration of the World Health Day.

While she was still talking, the NDC MPs reportedly exhibited disinterest.
They further refused to make any contribution after her statement when called upon to contribute by the Speaker, Prof. Mike Ocquaye.
