Managing Editor of The Herald newspaper, Larry Dogbey, has expressed deep appreciation to colleagues, friends, family, and the general public for the overwhelming support he received following his brief imprisonment for contempt of court.

Speaking on Accra-based Channel One TV, Mr. Dogbey described the experience as one of the occupational hazards of journalism, while remaining committed to pursuing his appeal.

“It’s the hazard of the job. We go through this all the time. But thanks to friends, family and people who have followed my work over the years and appreciated the level of dedication we put into it,” he said.

Mr. Dogbey was particularly moved by the solidarity shown by the media fraternity and ordinary citizens from all walks of life.

“Good friends, lawyers, judges, politicians, the average policeman, prison officers — everybody. I was shocked that people came out with that level of support,” he said.

He also extended special thanks to Channel One TV for standing by him during the ordeal.

Mr. Dogbey confirmed that he remains on bail pending the hearing of his appeal, which was granted for 10 days after an ex parte application.

“We are still going through the process. I’m on bail pending an appeal. The bail was granted ex parte, so we are supposed to file additional documents, after which they will be served. I want to say thank you to everybody for coming through for me. It was overwhelming,” he added.

Mr. Dogbey was sentenced to 10 days in prison by the Accra High Court on Thursday, June 25, after being found guilty of contempt over publications relating to a high-profile legal dispute between businessman Kevin Okyere and Petraco SA. He was released on bail the following day.

The case has sparked widespread discussion about press freedom and the boundaries of court orders in ongoing legal matters.
