The suspect was arrested with a loaded gun

Residents of Hamile in the Upper West Region are living in fear following the arrest of a Burkinabe national caught with a loaded pistol in a Catholic Church.

Assemblyman for Hamile Muoteng, Emmanuel Tengbekuor in an interview with Adom News said there is currently an uneasy calm as residents fear possible reprisal attacks from suspected Jihadists groups who they suspect are linked to the suspect.

The fears of the residents are further heightened by recent attacks in Burkina Faso, sponsored by Jihadists groups.

The Assemblyman, therefore, called on the police and other security agencies to beef up security in the various communities.

Background

A member of the Catholic Church in Hamile, George Naiku, upon suspicion, gave a tip off to the police for the arrest of the suspect in church.

Narrating what transpired, Mr Naiku said “I was on my way to church on Sunday when he asked me for direction to the Catholic Church in French but I was enable to help because I cannot speak French. I asked a man who understands French to assist him as he entered the church. Upon interrogation, we saw the gun in his pocket and we reported him to the police.”

REGSEC

The Municipal Chief Executive for Sisala East, Mr Karimu Nayuo disclosed that his office had made contingency plans for the security services to provide police patrol teams to provide security in every community.

He assured residents of tight security as the Regional Security Council (REGSEC) is currently putting in place further measures to secure the area.
