The family of a 30-year-old man, Bismark Amoh, who was abducted over alleged mobile money fraud raised GH¢19,500 in a desperate bid to secure his freedom, but the kidnappers still refused to release him until the full ransom was paid.
Central North Police Commander DCOP Abraham Acquaye disclosed the details on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem following his rescue.
According to him, the family first reported to the police that the man had left home on 6th September and had not returned.
Subsequently, he said the family began receiving videos sent from Bismark’s phone number showing that he had been kidnapped.
“The suspect’s family came to the police station to complain that the guy left home on September 6th and has still not returned home. They were there when they started receiving videos from the guy’s number that he had been kidnapped, and they were demanding ransom,” DCOP Acquaye said.
When the family called the number, the captors claimed the victim had defrauded them of GH¢44,000 and set a deadline.
“They called the line and they were told the guy had defrauded them to the tune of 44,000 and gave a deadline that if they don’t pay the money, they will kill the guy,” the commander stated.
Because the family did not have the amount, they went round begging for support and managed to raise GH¢19,500, which they sent to the kidnappers. The captors, however, rejected the partial payment and insisted on the full sum.
“Because the family doesn’t have it, they had to go about begging for support and were able to raise 19,500, and they sent it. The people were still insisting that they were taking 45,000, and until they pay it all, they will not release the guy,” DCOP Acquaye said.
Police later rescued the victim, with investigations into the abduction and the alleged fraud are ongoing.
The Police Commander acknowledged that although a crime was committed, the alleged kidnappers should have reported the case for appropriate action instead of keeping and torturing him.
Meanwhile, four people have been arrested and remanded in connection with the incident.
