An Accra High Court has granted the defence team of NPP Ashanti Regional Chairman Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, until July 13, 2026, to file written submissions in the alleged Samreboi illegal mining case.
The court subsequently adjourned proceedings to July 20, 2026, when judgment is expected.
The extension was granted during proceedings on Monday, June 29, following an application by Wontumi’s new lawyer, Samuel Atta Akyea, who recently took over the defence and sought additional time to familiarise himself with the case.
The Office of the Attorney General had initially opposed the application, arguing in a 13-paragraph affidavit filed on June 25 that Wontumi had been represented by counsel throughout the trial and that the withdrawal of his previous lawyer was voluntary.
Senior State Attorney Nana Ama Prempeh contended that the new defence counsel should have obtained case records from his predecessor rather than seeking them from the court registry.
However, the prosecution did not object to the extension at Monday’s hearing.
Wontumi appointed Atta Akyea as his new lead counsel on June 15, following the withdrawal of his former lawyer, Andy Appiah-Kubi.
