There is heavy security presence at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi as the New Patriotic Party (NPP) holds its National Delegates Conference to elect new national executives.
Hundreds of police officers have been deployed in and around the stadium ahead of the arrival of delegates.
The Chairperson of the party’s Organisation Committee, Anthony Abayifaa Karbo, had earlier said between 3,000 and 4,000 police personnel would be deployed to Kumasi for the conference.
He said they would manage traffic, secure the hotels and hostels housing delegates and guests, and provide security around and inside the stadium. Mr Karbo commended the Inspector-General of Police and the Ashanti Regional Police Command for their cooperation in the preparations.
About 7,100 delegates are expected to vote in the elections, which will be supervised by the Electoral Commission (EC). The EC says all electoral materials, including ballot papers, are ready, and accredited agents of the candidates will observe the process.
To keep voting from running late into the night, the party has set up 31 voting centres inside the stadium. The conference will open with constitutional and other party business before voting begins.
Forty-six candidates remain on the final ballot after National Youth Organiser Salam Mustapha withdrew from the National Organiser race.
The positions up for election are National Chairperson, Vice-Chairpersons, General Secretary, National Treasurer, National Organiser, National Youth Organiser, National Women’s Organiser and National Nasara Organiser. Dennis Miracles Aboagye is the only candidate for National Communications Director.
The elections follow the completion of polling station, electoral area, constituency and regional polls, and will determine the party’s national leadership as it prepares for the 2028 general election.
