Minister for Education and Member of Parliament for Tamale South, Haruna Iddrisu, has paid tribute to the late Yaa-Na Abubakari Mahama II, describing him as a “paramount unifier” whose reign brought peace, reconciliation and stability to the Dagbon Kingdom.

In a post on X following the announcement of the overlord’s passing, Mr Iddrisu said Dagbon had lost a towering traditional ruler whose legacy would endure for generations.

“Today, Dagbon does not merely mourn a monarch, we mourn the passing of a paramount unifier,” he wrote.

Mr Iddrisu described Yaa-Na Abubakari Mahama II, heir to the legendary Tohazie and the ancient throne forged between the 13th and 15th centuries, as a leader who upheld the legacy of Naa Gbewaa and Naa Nyagsi while consolidating the Dagbon Kingdom.

“Your reign was defined by bridge-building and a profound commitment to reconciliation, leaving behind a heritage of peace that will echo through the ages,” he added.

He urged the people of Dagbon to protect the unity restored during the late overlord’s reign by honouring the traditional rotational succession system between the Abudu and Andani royal gates.

“Let an Abudu follow an Andani, and let an Andani follow an Abudu, so that Dagbon remains eternally indivisible, tranquil, and formidable,” he stated.

Mr Iddrisu prayed for the soul of Yaa-Na Abubakari Mahama II, asking Almighty Allah to grant him eternal rest and lasting peace for the Dagbon Kingdom.

The tribute adds to a growing list of condolences from political leaders, traditional authorities and Ghanaians mourning the passing of Yaa-Na Abubakari Mahama II, whose reign is widely credited with promoting unity and reconciliation in Dagbon.
