The Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) has attributed the widespread power outage recorded across parts of the country on Thursday, August 20, 2026, to a major fault on the Akosombo–Volta transmission line.

GRIDCo said the fault occurred at about 4:30 a.m., triggering the automatic shutdown of the Akosombo generating units and some thermal power plants.

According to the company, the automatic shutdown was a protective measure designed to safeguard the stability and integrity of the National Interconnected Transmission System.

The incident disrupted electricity supply to several communities in Accra and other parts of the country.

GRIDCo said its engineers, working alongside other power sector agencies, immediately isolated the affected transmission line and began the process of safely restoring power to affected areas.

It said electricity had already been restored to some communities, while restoration efforts were ongoing in areas that remained without power.

The company added that all relevant technical teams had been deployed and were working to restore full power supply as quickly and safely as possible.

GRIDCo apologised to affected customers for the inconvenience caused by the outage and assured the public that updates would be provided as restoration efforts progress.

It also appealed to customers to remain patient and cooperate with the technical teams as work continues to fully restore power across the affected areas.
