The government has announced plans to construct new Community Day Schools in Nima and Kasoa under the Secondary Education Transformation for Access, Relevance and Results (STARR-J) Project as part of efforts to expand access to secondary education.
The Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, disclosed this during the Government Accountability Series on Monday, July 20, saying the initiative forms part of government’s broader strategy to bridge infrastructure gaps and improve access to quality education.
According to the Minister, President John Dramani Mahama has directed that more Community Day Schools be established across the country, following the model of the existing facility at Kwabenya.
“It is the view of President Mahama that we should encourage the establishment of Community Day Schools in the category of what is in Kwabenya. We will build one of that in Nima and one in Kasoa as part of the STARR-J Project,” Mr Iddrisu stated.
He also announced that the STARR-J Project will strengthen inclusive education through the construction of a new Special Needs Education facility in Ho in the Volta Region.
The Minister said the facility will improve access to specialised educational services for learners with disabilities in the region.
“I am also happy to note that under the STARR-J Project, Ho in the Volta Region will benefit from a new Special Needs Education facility to support learners with disability in that area,” he said.
Mr Iddrisu explained that the STARR-J Project is designed to improve infrastructure across senior high schools, senior high technical schools and Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions while enhancing access, relevance and the quality of secondary education in Ghana.
