Chelsea have completed the signing of England international Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa in a deal worth a reported £117 million, the club announced on Tuesday.
Rogers, who had been heavily linked to a potential move to Arsenal this summer, moves to Stamford Bridge to play under new manager Xabi Alonso.
The England attacking midfielder has agreed a six-year contract at Stamford Bridge, running until 2032, with the option of a further 12 months.
The 23-year-old completed his medical on Monday before finalising his move, with Alonso and Chelsea’s long-term sporting project understood to have been key factors in his decision, according to The Athletic.
Rogers told the club’s official website: “I’m joining the biggest club in London. The way the club wants to go, and how it wants to move forward, it’s something I want to be a part of, and I think it was just perfect for me.
“I’m a free spirit, free-flowing footballer. I like to take risks, make things happen, change games. Whatever that might take… I just can’t wait to get going.”
The transfer surpasses Chelsea’s previous record fee of £106m, paid to Benfica for Argentina midfielder Enzo Fernandez during the January 2023 transfer window, and represents a significant statement of intent from the west London club.
Rogers had attracted interest from elsewhere, with Arsenal among the clubs reportedly monitoring his situation, but the former Middlesbrough forward chose Chelsea as his preferred destination after becoming one of the Premier League’s most exciting attacking talents in recent years.
Villa had been determined to retain Rogers, who signed a new contract at Villa Park in November 2024 that extended his deal until 2030 and reflected his growing importance under Unai Emery.
However, Chelsea’s pursuit proved decisive as they secured the services of a player who has rapidly developed into one of English football’s standout creative threats.
Rogers joined Aston Villa from Middlesbrough in February 2024 for an initial £7m fee, with a further £8m available in add-ons. As part of that agreement, Middlesbrough also retained a 20% sell-on clause, meaning they stand to benefit significantly from the record-breaking move to Chelsea.
After arriving at Villa Park, Rogers established himself as a key figure in Villa’s rise, contributing 31 goals and 29 assists in 125 appearances.
During the 2025/26 campaign, he played a central role in Villa’s success, registering 14 goals and 12 assists across all competitions, as the club secured UEFA Champions League qualification and lifted the UEFA Europa League trophy.
The move also caps a rapid rise for a player whose development began in the academies of West Bromwich Albion and Manchester City before he made his senior breakthrough with Middlesbrough.
Rogers earned his first senior England call-up in November 2024 and has since become part of Thomas Tuchel’s plans, featuring consistently throughout England’s 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign.
He started the final group-stage fixture against Panama and the defeat by Argentina, while also making a decisive contribution in the semi-final by delivering the cross that allowed Anthony Gordon to score England’s only goal.
