The Coronavirus has killed over 80 people in china

Ghanaian students in Wuhan, China are insisting the Government of Ghana should, with immediate effect, evacuate them as the death toll on the Coronavirus rises.

According to them, they have been locked down in Wuhan for almost 21 days now with all shops in the city closed, making it difficult for them to access basic necessities, a situation which has left many traumatised.

Speaking in an interview on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen, the immediate past president of National Union of Ghana Students-China, Philip Arthur, said they expect to immediately emulate the evacuation processes other countries have started.

“Wuhan is on a locked down with no services running. Most countries have begun evacuating their nationals from China and as it stands now, all of the about 300 Ghanaians demand an immediate evacuation,” he said.

According to Mr Arthur, though the students appreciate the support being rendered to them, they believe an evacuation will be a better option to save all of the students.

“The government gave us some money to procure medical supplies but the issue is we don’t need the money because we can’t even go out to buy those medical necessities because the shops are closed,” he lamented.

He further stressed students do not know when they will even resume academic activities which was scheduled for February since the reported cases keep increasing by the day.

Meanwhile, Minority Spokesperson on Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, says the Akufo-Addo government cannot continue to ignore the plea of the Ghanaian students for evacuation.

Mr Ablakwa maintained that the government needs to consider the risk factors and act fast.
