Ghana Water Ltd (GWL) has dismissed claims circulating on social media suggesting that a burst water pipeline inside an overflowing sewage chamber is contaminating the company’s potable water supply.
In a statement, the company described the allegations as “false, misleading, and without any factual or technical basis.”
GWL said it immediately deployed a team of engineers and technical experts to inspect the location after a video making the claims began circulating online.
According to the company, the assessment established that the pipeline shown in the video does not belong to Ghana Water Ltd but is a trunk sewer inlet pipeline designed to transport wastewater into the sewage chamber as part of the sewerage system.
“The investigation further established that there is no Ghana Water pipeline within the sewage chamber, and no burst, damaged, or exposed GWL pipeline at the location. Consequently, the allegation that sewage is entering Ghana Water’s distribution system is entirely unfounded,” the statement said.
The company assured the public that its potable water infrastructure is completely separate from sewerage systems and is designed to prevent any interaction between drinking water and wastewater.
It added that water supplied to consumers undergoes rigorous treatment, continuous operational monitoring and routine laboratory testing to ensure it meets the Ghana Standards Authority’s drinking water quality standards.
Ghana Water Ltd has urged the public to disregard the viral video and rely only on information issued through its official communication channels.
