Minority Chief Whip and Member of Parliament (MP) for Asawasi in the Ashanti Region, Muhammad Muntaka Mubarak has called for the boycotting of South African products by Ghanaians.
The reason, the MP speaking on the floor of Parliament said is part of protesting Xenophobic attacks happening in the Southern African country in recent times.
Natives of the rainbow nation started xenopobic attacks against foreigners mainly Nigerians over accusations that the foreigners are responsible for the accute unemployment in the country.
On Saturday, residents of Pretoria, one of South Africa’s major cities raided homes they alleged were being used as brothels and drug dens. They called for “pimps” to release prostitutes and send them back home. Two houses were set alight.
On February 11, at least 10 houses allegedly being used for drug dealing and prostitution were set alight in Rosettenville, Johannesburg.
The African News Agency today reported that police have arrested 42 people following violence in Rosettenville earlier in February.
Of those arrested, 27 were undocumented foreign nationals. One person was arrested for carrying an illegal firearm, while another 14 were arrested for possession of drugs or dealing in drugs.
And the MP commenting on this in Ghana’s Parliament demanded that Ghana boycotts South African products as part of the process to registering the displeasure of the nation against the attacks.
