Ghana secured a 24th-place finish in the final standings of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, marking a successful return to football’s biggest stage with a place in the knockout phase.
The Black Stars’ final position was confirmed after the conclusion of the expanded 48-team tournament, which ended with Spain defeating Argentina in the final to lift the trophy. England finished third, while France placed fourth.
Ghana finished ahead of several established football nations in the final standings, including Ecuador (25th), South Africa (26th), Sweden (27th), Austria (28th), Algeria (30th) and Senegal (31st).
The Black Stars reached the knockout stage after a competitive Group L campaign against England, Croatia and Panama.
Ghana opened their World Cup campaign with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Panama in Toronto, where youngster Caleb Yirenkyi struck a dramatic late winner to seal all three points. They followed that with a disciplined goalless draw against England before suffering a narrow 2-1 defeat to Croatia in their final group match.
Despite finishing third in the group, Ghana progressed to the Round of 32 as one of the tournament’s best third-placed teams under FIFA’s expanded 48-team format.
Their campaign ended in Kansas City with a 1-0 defeat to Colombia, as Jhon Arias scored the decisive goal to deny the Black Stars a place in the Round of 16. Nevertheless, reaching the knockout stage marked a significant improvement on Ghana’s group-stage exit at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.
The tournament also showcased the emergence of promising talent, with Caleb Yirenkyi among Ghana’s standout performers. Experienced campaigners, including captain Jordan Ayew and midfielder Thomas Partey, also played influential roles throughout the tournament.
Ghana’s 24th-place finish represents a positive outcome in their fifth FIFA World Cup appearance and their best performance since reaching the quarter-finals at the 2010 tournament in South Africa. It also marked a return to the knockout stage after group-stage exits in both 2014 and 2022.
The campaign provides a solid foundation as the Black Stars begin a new cycle, with attention now turning to qualification for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations.
Ghana have been drawn in Group C alongside Ivory Coast, Gambia and Somalia, and will be hoping to build on the momentum from their World Cup campaign as they target a return to continental success.
