Ghana Football Association (GFA) Vice President Mark Addo says the GH¢1 million financial support being offered to each Ghana Premier League club ahead of the 2026/27 season represents a significant development in the administration and financing of the domestic competition.
The GFA announced the financial and incentive package during its 32nd Ordinary Congress at the Ghanaman Soccer Centre of Excellence in Prampram on Thursday, which includes a base payment of GH¢1 million to every top-flight club to support team operations and financial stability.
Speaking to the media after Congress, Mr Addo said the upfront payment, which forms part of the GFA’s new financial package for top-flight clubs, is unprecedented in the league and should provide teams with greater financial stability before the start of the campaign.
“For the first time, each club is receiving like a million cedis before the league starts. That’s unheard of,” he said.
According to Mr Addo, the intervention is part of a broader set of initiatives being implemented by the GFA to strengthen the Ghana Premier League and improve the benefits available to participating clubs.
The GH¢1 million support is expected to help clubs meet some of their operational obligations as they prepare for the new season, including squad building and other logistical requirements.
Beyond the direct financial support, the GFA Vice President said work is also ongoing to increase the commercial value of the league through broadcasting, sponsorship and other revenue streams.
He noted that the GFA and its marketing department continue to explore opportunities to generate more value from the competition.
“The marketing department and the FA continue to work all the time, and as more sponsors come in, we will definitely make sure,” he said.
Mr Addo believes the GPL remains the association’s most important domestic football product and therefore requires carefully selected commercial partners capable of adding value to the competition.
“GPL is our best product, so we have to also make sure that we have the right fit in terms of the right sponsor.”
The GH¢1 million base payment forms part of a wider GH¢9.5 million prize and incentive package for the 2026/27 Ghana Premier League season.
The champions will also receive GH¢3 million and a JAC vehicle, while the runners-up, third- and fourth-placed clubs will earn GH¢1 million, GH¢800,000 and GH¢750,000 respectively.
Meanwhile, the 2026/27 Ghana Premier League season is scheduled to kick off on September 5.
