Former Ghana Football Association (GFA) vice-president George Afriyie says he will do everything within his power to prevent Kurt Okraku from seeking a third term as president of the football governing body.
Okraku, who was first elected GFA president in 2019, is currently serving his second term after being re-elected in 2023, unopposed after Afriyie was disqualified.
His potential bid for a third term became possible after the GFA Congress approved an amendment extending the presidential term limit from two four-year terms to three.
Afriyie, a former chairman of the Black Stars Management Committee, has strongly opposed the move and says he wants a new person to lead the association.
“Kurt Okraku’s third term as GFA President will never happen,” Afriyie told Sporty FM.
“I want to see a new FA President, and some of us are willing to petition the president of the land [John Mahama].”
Afriyie also questioned the decision to change the term limit, arguing that Ghana’s national Constitution restricts the President of the Republic to two terms.
“Even our constitution governing our country allows the president to only run for two terms, and there was a reason why the Normalisation Committee kept the GFA presidential term at two terms of four,” he added.
The GFA’s Ordinary Congress approved the constitutional amendment extending the term limit to three four-year terms.
At the meeting, 114 of the 124 delegates present voted in favour of the proposal, while six voted against it and three abstained. The proposal therefore received 91.9 per cent approval.
Under the new arrangement, the GFA President and members of the Executive Council can serve a maximum of three four-year terms, allowing them to remain in office for up to 12 years.
Congress also approved a change to the composition of the Executive Council, elevating the Women’s Football Representative to the position of Second Vice-President.
Afriyie, who narrowly lost the 2019 GFA presidential election to Okraku, has previously expressed his interest in influencing the direction of Ghanaian football.
