The Ghana Association of University Administrators (GAUA) has suspended its industrial action after the government addressed 80% of the concerns that led to the strike.

The union announced the decision on Friday, October 16, following engagements with the government over disparities in market premiums and other allowances between teaching and non-teaching staff in Ghana’s public universities.

Speaking to the media, GAUA National President Kwaku Karikari Amoah said the government’s response demonstrated a willingness to resolve the union’s concerns.

“On that basis, we agreed that we unanimously suspend this strike so that our members will go back to their offices Monday to work,” he said.

The strike was triggered by concerns over differences in remuneration and allowances for university staff, with GAUA calling for greater fairness in the conditions of service of non-teaching personnel.

The industrial action had raised concerns about the administrative operations of public universities, where administrators play a key role in supporting academic activities and managing the day-to-day affairs of the institutions.

Although the government has addressed 80% of the union’s concerns, some issues remain unresolved.

GAUA is expected to continue discussions with the relevant authorities to address the outstanding grievances and work towards a lasting settlement.
