Finance Minister Dr Cassiel Ato Forson has assured Ghanaians that government will not borrow to fund the Accra-Kumasi Expressway, promising the full construction cost will be in place by December 2026.
The minister who was speaking at Monday’s handover of the 175.6-kilometre right-of-way for the project, said the money would come entirely from domestic sources, as government works to deliver major infrastructure without piling on more debt.
“This handover clears the way for an expressway that will cut travel time and transport cost, improve road safety and set a new standard for our infrastructure delivery,” he said.
“As your Minister for Finance, I want to use this opportunity to assure the nation that the entire amount needed for the construction of this expressway will be ready by December 2026. For the avoidance of doubt, we will not borrow a Pesewa for this construction.”
He said arrangements are already underway to mobilise the funds domestically, with construction expected to proceed without any financial hold-ups once it begins.
Once completed , the 198.7-kilometre expressway, will link the country’s southern and central corridors, cutting travel time and transport costs between Accra and Kumasi. It will also ease pressure on the existing road network and is expected to improve road safety through modern infrastructure built to handle rising traffic volumes on the route.
Monday’s handover moves the project into its next phase of preparation.
