Ghanaian boxer Bukom Banku has thrown his support behind the Accra Metropolitan Assembly’s ongoing demolition exercise in parts of Gamashie, urging residents to cooperate with the authorities to improve the community.
According to him, the exercise should not be viewed through a political lens as the removal of unauthorised structures is necessary to improve sanitation and safety.
Bukom Banku said residents should support the Accra Mayor and the task force because the mayor, as the overseer of the metropolis, has a responsibility to ensure that the community is properly managed.
He expressed concern about the number of unauthorised structures in parts of James Town and other areas of Accra, as well as activities that obstruct roads and create sanitation and safety problems.
He cited choked gutters and the practice of cooking and selling along major roads as some of the issues affecting the community, noting that such activities can contribute to accidents and make movement difficult.
Bukom Banku also criticised residents who, during demolition exercises, argue that they voted for the government and therefore deserve to have their structures spared.
He stressed that the exercise should not be interpreted as an attack on supporters of any political party but rather as an effort to restore order and enforce proper planning regulations.
He therefore called on residents, including NDC supporters, to cooperate with the government instead of protesting against the demolition of unauthorised structures.
Bukom Banku said the focus should be on building a cleaner and better-planned Gamashie.
