Deputy Communications Director of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Jennifer Oforiwaa Queen, has criticised the government’s Free Primary Healthcare policy, describing it as unnecessary given existing challenges in the country.
Speaking on UTV Ghana, she argued that the policy duplicates the role of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), which already provides primary healthcare services.
According to her, government resources should instead be directed toward pressing issues affecting citizens, including unpaid salaries of teachers who, she claimed, have gone months without payment.
She also pointed to concerns raised by the Ghana Union of Traders’ Associations (GUTA) and importers, noting that funds allocated to the new healthcare policy could be used to address challenges at the ports.
Jennifer Queen maintained that while improving healthcare is important, the current policy does not reflect the most urgent needs of Ghanaians.
“We already have NHIS. Government should prioritise paying workers and addressing pressing issues instead of introducing a policy that duplicates existing services,” she said.
She therefore urged government to reassess its priorities and focus on resolving critical economic and social issues.
