A former Regional Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Benard Allotey Jacobs, has commended the government for increasing communication service tax (CST).
Mr Allotey Jacobs has given the repatriation of huge profits by the telcos from Ghana as the basis for his support.
The CST, also known as ‘talk tax’, has been increased from six to nine percent.

Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta, presenting government’s Mid-Year Budget Review statement to Parliament has explained that the CST would cushion the government to work on safeguarding digital infrastructure belonging to the state.
But the Ghana Chamber of Telecommunications has made a counter-argument, insisting that the tax would affect investments into the sector.
But Mr Jacobs on Adom FM’s morning show, Dwaso Nsem programme Tuesday said the telcos had no case.

“These telcos make a lot of profit but deliver poor services; I support the increase of the Communications Service Tax,” he stated.
He suggested that the tax would compensate Ghanaians for the poor quality service delivery of the telcos.

Allotey Jacobs urged the telcos to accept the tax in good faith and contribute to the socio-economic development of Ghana.
