The recent floods in parts of Ghana may result in serious food crises, especially in the Upper East Region, Member of Parliament for Builsa North, James Agalga, has predicted.

According to Mr Agalga, floods which caused the destruction of several farmlands in the area have put residents in difficult situations despite the relief items made available to them by the National Disaster Management Organisation.

“The most threatening issue that we have to grapple with now is the looming food insecurity the region is bound to suffer because crops have been destroyed and farms have been submerged,” he reported.

Speaking in an interview on Accra-Based Citi FM, Mr Agalga urged the government to immediately roll out measures to avert the looming crises.

The MP indicated that the victims need over GH¢20 million to sustain themselves.

“The issue is how these people will make a living when the dry season sets in since they couldn’t harvest crops. Some of them have lost everything, their homes and farmlands,” he said.

A total of 28 people lost their lives in recent torrential rains in the Upper East region rendering a lot of residents homeless.
