Heavy rainfall in Takoradi has disrupted academic work at the Opportunities Industrialisation Technical Institute (OITI), where flooding has forced the suspension of examinations and other school activities.
On Thursday, June 4, students and staff were left stranded at the main gate as floodwaters submerged parts of the campus, making it impossible to access classrooms.
Several students who spoke to Accra-based Citi News described the situation as frustrating, saying the flooding has become a recurring challenge that continues to damage learning materials and disrupt academic work.
One student explained that desks, books, and even equipment are often destroyed whenever it rains heavily, negatively affecting academic performance.
“We’ve been here for about two and a half years, and this keeps happening. Each time it rains heavily, everything gets flooded and our materials are destroyed. It really affects our studies,” the student said.
Another student noted that the situation even halted scheduled examinations.
“We were supposed to write exams today, but we couldn’t even enter the classrooms. We are all stranded outside. It’s disturbing, and we are pleading for help. The school should be relocated,” the student added.
The incident has once again drawn attention to long-standing concerns over poor drainage and infrastructure challenges affecting schools in parts of the Western Region.
