The Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service has arrested five people for their alleged involvement in human trafficking and cyber-enabled criminal activities following an intelligence-led operation at Kwabenya in Accra.
The operation, conducted on July 12, 2026, was carried out by officers from the Cybercrime Unit, the Anti-Human Trafficking Unit and the CID Headquarters Operations Unit.
Addressing journalists on Wednesday, July 21, 2026, the Director-General of the CID, Commissioner of Police Lydia Yaako Donkor, said the arrests formed part of four major operations targeting cyber-enabled fraud, human trafficking and illicit firearms trafficking.
The suspects have been identified as Chigozi Azubuike, 35; Edwin Onyema, 24; Kingsley Nwanchukwu, 29; Henry Ebuke, 32; and Harrison Godwin, 26.
The Police said the operation led to the retrieval of 52 assorted mobile phones and several wireless internet devices believed to have been used for cybercrime-related activities.
According to the CID, intelligence gathered on July 11 indicated that a group of young Nigerians had allegedly been trafficked into Ghana and kept in a residential apartment at Kwabenya, where they were reportedly being forced to engage in cybercrime.
Acting on the information, officers searched a three-bedroom apartment at the location. During the search, they became suspicious of a locked room.
Police said one of the suspects, Chigozi Azubuike, claimed the room belonged to his elder brother, who was away at the time. However, officers found the explanation unconvincing and forced entry into the room.
Preliminary investigations revealed that 18 Nigerian nationals, aged between 15 and 24, had allegedly been trafficked from Nigeria and brought to Ghana.
Investigators further alleged that Azubuike instructed the victims to identify themselves as one group and conceal information from the Police if questioned.
The victims have since been rescued and relocated to a secure facility, where they are receiving support from the appropriate authorities.
The five suspects were arraigned before Circuit Court 7 on July 16, 2026, and have been remanded into Police custody as investigations continue.
