Victor Owusu Appraku wants his car back

A businessman based in Germany is accusing police in East Legon of selling his Man Diesel tipper truck with registration number GR-370U.

Mr Victor Owusu Appraku said he sought permission to park the car at the police station in 2005 and returned to his base abroad.

Upon his return to Ghana, he was told one Chief Inspector Yaw Gyan, who was given the keys to the 10-wheel industry truck with a 14 cubic bucket, had sold it.

The distraught man, sharing his ordeal on Fabewoso, the anti-corruption segment on Adom FM’s morning show, Dwaso Nsem said he is now at his wits end.

He said he reported the case to then East Legon Police Commander, DSP George Asare who summoned the officer for questioning.

Mr Appraku said the Chief Inspector Gyan confessed to have sold the car and gave them the assurance that, he would return the vehicle.

But, months after the promise, he said the police officer could not fulfill the promise.

Mr Appraku said he then lodged a formal complaint at the Police Intelligence and Professional Standards Bureau (PIPS), but is yet to receive a response.

“I have lost confidence in the police because I believe the police station was a safe place to keep my car after my nephew sold one of the cars,” he bemoaned.

The businessman is considering suing government for the misconduct of the police.

When reached for comment, then East Legon Police Commander, DSP Asare confirmed his story but said there was nothing on record to show the car was at the station.

He said his predecessor failed to indicate it in his handing over notes but upon investigations, he noticed that the car was with Chief Inspector Gyan.

“Gyan has been at East Legon for 15 years so I expected him to do the right thing when the car key was given to him. He confessed to have sold the car but when we went to PIPS he denied it,” he added.

The Police Commander said since he is no more at the station, the current East Legon police commander should be the right person to speak on the matter.

DSP Asare said he is ready to testify anywhere to ensure Mr Appraku gets justice.
