The Manhyia South Member of Parliament, Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah, has been granted GH¢50 million bail by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO), as Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin calls on the agency to intensify efforts to pursue major drug trafficking networks.
Mr Baffour Awuah was granted bail with three sureties after voluntarily reporting to EOCO’s premises at about 10 a.m. on Thursday, October 1, to assist with an ongoing investigation.
His appearance followed an arrest warrant issued by the Accra High Court after EOCO told the court that its earlier attempts to secure his attendance for questioning had been unsuccessful.
The investigation involves allegations of criminal conspiracy, financial loss to SIC Savings and Loans, money laundering and tax-related offences, among other matters.
The MP has denied receiving the alleged GH¢2.2 million as legal fees and has challenged aspects of EOCO’s account of its previous efforts to get him to appear for questioning.
EOCO has maintained that its investigations are ongoing and urged the public to avoid reaching conclusions about anyone’s culpability before the investigative and judicial processes are completed.
Meanwhile, Mr Afenyo-Markin has called on EOCO to broaden its focus and pursue the financiers and organisers behind Ghana-linked drug trafficking operations.
In a Facebook post on Thursday, October 1, the Effutu MP accused the agency of concentrating disproportionately on opposition figures while, in his view, failing to show comparable urgency in tackling major narcotics networks.
He urged EOCO to identify and prosecute those who finance and organise drug trafficking activities, arguing that investigations should extend beyond individuals already under scrutiny.
His comments come amid heightened public attention on Ghana-linked narcotics cases and the agency’s investigations into suspected economic and organised crime.
The separate matters remain ongoing, and the allegations against Mr Baffour Awuah have not been established as findings of guilt.
