Motorists travelling through parts of Kumasi on Saturday, October 3, will have to use alternative routes as police implement temporary road closures and traffic diversions around the Baba Yara Sports Stadium for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) National Delegates Conference and elections.
The Ashanti Regional Police Command says the arrangements are intended to ensure security, protect the public and manage traffic during the event.
Speaking to the media in Kumasi, the Head of the Police Public Affairs Unit, Superintendent Godwin Ahianyo, outlined the affected roads and alternative routes motorists are expected to use.
The roads to be closed temporarily to vehicular traffic are:
- Bridginia Traffic Lights to Carvery Methodist Church
- Unity Oil Fuel Station to T.I. Ahmadiyya Senior High School
- Is My Kitchen Restaurant to Bridginia Traffic Lights
Under the diversion arrangements, commercial vehicles coming from Amakom will proceed straight towards Asokwa, while vehicles from Asafo will be diverted at Bridginia Traffic Lights towards Asokwa or Amakom Traffic Lights.
Commercial vehicles travelling from LLL towards T.I. Ahmadiyya Senior High School will proceed straight to Amakom Traffic Lights.
Vehicles moving from Kumasi City Mall towards Afful Nkwanta Junction will be diverted through Bulldog Restaurant, while traffic from Afful Nkwanta will proceed straight towards Kumasi City Mall.
The Police Command has also announced designated parking areas for delegates and officials, warning that the arrangements will be strictly enforced.
The VVIP Car Park will be reserved for former Presidents and the NPP presidential candidate. Members of Parliament, former MPs, Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs), and chief executive officers will use the Scoreboard Parking Area.
Regional delegates arriving by bus and national party executives are expected to park at Heroes Park, while official police vehicles will be stationed at the Hockey Pitch.
The Command says access to designated areas will be restricted to duly accredited individuals and vehicles. Motorists must display their accreditation prominently and comply with instructions from officers deployed to manage the event.
It has cautioned drivers against parking in unauthorised areas or attempting to bypass roadblocks.
“Personnel from the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) will be stationed at strategic points to direct traffic and enforce the restrictions.
“Towing trucks will also be available to remove wrongly parked or abandoned vehicles to the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) yard, with the cost charged to the owners,” he added.
The Police have urged motorists, delegates, party supporters and the general public to plan their journeys ahead of time, use alternative routes and avoid parking around the stadium.
They warned that unauthorised access, illegal parking and obstruction of designated routes would not be tolerated, and apologised for any inconvenience the temporary measures may cause.
