General Secretary aspirant of the New Patriotic Party, Eugene Boakye Antwi, has said both major political parties in Ghana are facing the same fundamental challenges, warning that the “symptoms are the same” despite different actors.
Speaking on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem morning show, he said the NPP’s current situation is a reflection of lessons that were ignored after the 2016 elections.
“I think the two political parties have the same sickness. The symptoms are the same, just different actors,” he said.
“I remember what we discussed in 2016, and we thought it would not happen to us. That is the same thing that sent us into opposition.”
He added that the performance of the opposition National Democratic Congress will ultimately be judged by Ghanaians, stressing that political power lies with the electorate.
According to him, the focus of the NPP must be on rebuilding the party ahead of the 2028 elections.
“Our focus is that we should rebuild our party to put it in a position of winning the next election. Ghanaians are the ones who voted for the NDC, and they are the same people who will vote for all of us,” he stated.
He noted that voters are closely assessing political parties based on their ability to deliver.
“They are looking at what governments can do and what they cannot do,” he said.
Mr Antwi further urged party members to be disciplined in their public communication, saying some comments undermine the party’s image.
“Sometimes our comments are not respectful. We must present an image that shows we are a credible party,” he said.
He stressed that winning elections requires preparation and hard work rather than slogans.
“Elections are not slogans; they are hard work. When you are winning, you can tell. That is why, tactically, the NDC since 2005 has often selected former MPs and ministers to lead the charge,” he added.
