The Christian Health Association of Ghana (CHAG) and the Private Health Facilities Association of Ghana have said the government’s indebtedness to the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) is collapsing private health facilities in Ghana.
According to the group, they have for almost six months not been paid which is affecting the strength of the facilities leading to some closures.

Speaking at the 2nd Edition of the Ekosii Sen National Dialogue Series on June 7, 2019 at the Coconut Grove Hotel, on the theme ‘Sustaining the NHIS: Prospects and Challenges’, representatives from the two groups, Mr Ofori Mensah and Mrs Patricia Osei urged the government to treat the matter with the urgency it deserves.
“You are expected to submit your claims for payment within a month after which payment will proceed within three months, but as at now, we can stay over nine months without receiving payments,” they lamented.

“We expected government’s intervention with the NHIS to improve the medical delivery in Ghana, but some private health facilities are collapsing because we are not receiving our payments when is due for the smooth running of the facilities,” they lamented.
According to them, they previously had the opportunity to take government on for the delayed payments but after a review of the scheme’s Acts, that has been scrapped which has crippled them.
