The Ministry of Education has condemned the alleged sexual abuse of a 14-year-old student with autism at the Bolgatanga Girls’ Senior High School (BOGISS) in the Upper East Region.
The student is alleged to have been sexually assaulted by two watchmen employed by the school.
In a statement issued on Thursday, August 20, 2026, the Ministry described the incident as unacceptable and said schools must remain safe environments where students are protected and cared for.
“We condemn in the strongest terms any act of sexual abuse or exploitation of a child under our care,” the Ministry said.
It stressed that the student, as a minor, must not be blamed for the alleged abuse, particularly where the alleged perpetrators are adults entrusted with her safety.
Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu has directed the Ghana Education Service (GES) to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident and submit a report.
He has also ordered the Service to ensure that the student receives appropriate medical care and counselling to aid her recovery.
The Minister further directed the GES to restore the student’s boarding status with immediate effect.
Meanwhile, the GES has interdicted the two watchmen allegedly involved in the incident and handed them over to the Police to assist with investigations.
The Service said the student was on medication and suffered a relapse on the day of the alleged incident, resulting in the need for medical attention.
It said the alleged assault occurred during that period and assured the public that the matter was being handled with the seriousness it deserved.
The Ministry said it remained committed to protecting the safety, dignity and rights of children within Ghana’s education system and assured the student’s family that steps would be taken to ensure the matter is thoroughly investigated and justice served.
