The Beverage Consumers and Bar Owners Association of Ghana, commonly known as the Drunkards Association of Ghana, has announced a one-week suspension of alcohol consumption in honour of recently deceased national figures, including statesmen, musicians, and pastors.
In a statement signed by the association’s president, Moses Onyah, the directive will take effect from November 10 to 17, 2025, allowing members to reflect on their lives and undergo health screenings. The association estimates its membership at 16.7 million nationwide.
According to the statement, the recent spate of high-profile deaths has left members in “a period of mourning,” which paradoxically led to increased alcohol intake. To address this, leadership decided to impose a brief pause to promote self-care and mental well-being.
“We urge all members to use this period to engage their religious leaders to pray for the nation, President John Dramani Mahama, and the leadership of our association,” the statement read.
The group also advised members to be mindful of the quality of beverages they consume, especially during the upcoming festive season, and to ensure all drinks are approved by the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA).
It further commended bar owners across the country for supporting responsible drinking campaigns and complying with association directives.
In addition, the association appealed to government authorities to provide reflective clothing for members to enhance their visibility and safety during nighttime activities.
