Aspiring National Communications Director for New Patriotic Party , Dennis Miracles Aboagye has called on the Ghana Police Service to release social media personality Efya Royal, who he says has been arrested and detained for sharing a video online.

In a Facebook post, Mr Aboagye questioned the legal basis for the arrest and detention, asking whether laws governing the sharing of such content were being applied fairly.

He said citizens should not be subjected to what he described as selective application of the law.

“This isn’t fair. Not on at all and it’s surely not right to treat a fellow citizen this way.”

According to him, Efya Royal is being detained “simply for sharing a video online,” and he questioned why she remains in police custody.

“How is this law, if there is any, being applied? Selectively? Why are we doing this to ourselves? Sharing a video?”

Mr Aboagye urged the Police Service to release Efya Royal, arguing that if there are concerns about the contents of the video, authorities should pursue its original author.

“Respectfully, kindly release the young lady. If you have an issue with the content of the video, pls find the author.”

He further called for the law to be applied consistently if sharing another person’s video constitutes an offence.

“If there are laws to be applied, that is if sharing a video of another person is a crime, let’s see them being applied fairly and not selectively.”

Mr Aboagye disclosed that lawyers representing Efya Royal were heading to the Police Headquarters and expressed hope that she would be released by the close of day.

“Hopefully, by close of day, you shld do the needful and let your fellow citizen, Efya Royal be free.”
