Bose Ogulu, mother and manager of Nigerian Afrobeats star Burna Boy, has revealed how she handles her son when his outspoken nature takes over during his Instagram Live sessions.
According to Ogulu, she sometimes has to step in and take his phone away when she feels his online interactions are getting out of hand.
She made the revelation during an interview with media personality Ebuka Obi-Uchendu on Channels TV, where she discussed Burna Boy’s personality and the challenges that come with managing an artiste who is known for being outspoken.
Ogulu said she has learnt not to suppress the qualities that make her son who he is, explaining that the emotions behind some of his controversial moments are also part of what connects him with his audience.
“You can always notice the difference between when I tweet and when Burna tweets. What I’ve come to learn is that artists like him, they’re like a tapestry. If you pull at one thread too hard, everything will unravel,” she said.
She explained that rather than attempting to completely change his behaviour, she tries to make room for his individuality while intervening when necessary.
“So you must make allowances for this person being himself, because it’s the same emotion that what you love about him comes from. Within, we do what we can,” she said.
Ogulu then revealed one of the more direct ways she deals with Burna Boy during particularly heated Instagram Live sessions.
“I usually grab his phone from him anytime he goes wild on Instagram Live,” she said.
Burna Boy has built a reputation for his candid and sometimes controversial social media presence, with his Instagram Live sessions regularly drawing attention from fans and critics alike.
For Ogulu, however, managing the superstar appears to involve striking a balance between allowing him to remain authentic and knowing when it is time to step in.
