The Egyptian Ambassador to Ghana, His Excellency Wael Fathy Ahmed, has paid a working visit to the Minister for Defence, Kenneth Gilbert Adjei, at The Square in Accra as part of efforts to strengthen defence cooperation and deepen bilateral relations between Ghana and Egypt.
The meeting provided an opportunity for the Egyptian envoy to familiarise himself with the operations of Ghana’s Ministry of Defence and discuss areas of mutual interest for enhanced collaboration between the two countries.
Welcoming the Ambassador, Mr Adjei expressed Ghana’s appreciation for Egypt’s longstanding friendship and partnership, reaffirming the country’s commitment to strengthening bilateral defence relations.
He identified defence manufacturing, technology transfer and capacity building as key areas where Ghana and Egypt could deepen cooperation.
The Defence Minister commended Egypt for its continued support to the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF), particularly through specialised training for military engineers, healthcare professionals and technical officers.
He said strengthening the capabilities of the 48 Engineer Regiment, especially in disaster response and infrastructure protection, remains a national priority.
Mr Adjei also highlighted Egypt’s extensive experience in border security, intelligence and cybersecurity, proposing enhanced cooperation in intelligence-sharing, joint military exercises and specialised training.
According to the Minister, closer collaboration in these areas would contribute significantly to Ghana’s efforts to strengthen national security and counter violent extremism and other emerging security threats in West Africa.
Egypt pledges continued support
In response, Ambassador Wael Fathy Ahmed congratulated Mr Adjei on his appointment as Minister for Defence and reaffirmed Egypt’s commitment to strengthening its defence partnership with Ghana.
The Ambassador assured the Minister of Egypt’s readiness to support the Ghana Armed Forces in key areas, including cybersecurity, intelligence-sharing, training and border security.
He further expressed Egypt’s willingness to share its expertise and experience with Ghana, particularly in areas where it has developed significant institutional and operational capabilities.
Ambassador Fathy Ahmed also highlighted opportunities for Ghana and Egypt to explore joint ventures in defence manufacturing and technology transfer, while reiterating Egypt’s commitment to providing specialised training opportunities for personnel of the Ghana Armed Forces.
The engagement underscored the shared commitment of Ghana and Egypt to expanding defence cooperation, enhancing institutional capacity and contributing to peace and security in Ghana and the wider West African region.
The discussions are expected to provide a framework for further collaboration between the two countries in strengthening military capabilities, promoting knowledge and technology exchange, and addressing emerging security challenges.
