A 17-year-old boy has died after the van he was in crashed into a wall during a police chase.

A white Citroen Berlingo van was pursued by Essex Police through Basildon in the early hours of this morning.

Shortly after the chase started, the van smashed into a wall in the nearby village of Bowers Gifford.

The 17-year-old driver died at the scene while three others were rushed to hospital, Essex Live reports.

The road was closed throughout the morning but has now reopened after being shut for around 9 hours.

Senior Investigating Officer, Inspector Mark Fraser said: “My officers have been working through the night to begin to establish the circumstances leading up to this collision in which a young man sadly lost his life.

“I need anyone who saw what happened or has any CCTV, dash cam or doorbell footage to contact my team.”

Essex Police has made a mandatory referral to the IOPC.
