Ghanaian actress and film producer Salma Mumin says she lost several endorsement deals after facing intense social media backlash over her decision to undergo body enhancement.
Speaking during an interview on Joy Prime’s Changes show, Salma said she was initially reluctant to respond to criticism because she believed in keeping quiet, having embraced the notion that “silence is golden.”
According to her, she maintained that approach for years and avoided responding to both positive and negative reports about her.
However, she said the backlash over her body enhancement eventually became difficult to ignore, particularly as it began affecting her reputation, relationships and business opportunities.
“For the longest time I wasn’t responding to anything especially about my body enhancement because I felt it was a personal thing,” she explained.
Salma said she had previously secured endorsement deals with brands, including an association with Maggi Cube, but lost some of them following the public reaction to her body transformation.
She also claimed that some brands that had approached her and were already in discussions about potential deals withdrew from the negotiations because of the negative conversations surrounding her body enhancement.
“Back then I used to have endorsement and advertised for Maggi Cube and other brands, all of a sudden I lost all of that in the process,” she said.
The actress explained that she had considered the body enhancement a private decision and did not believe she needed to publicly announce it.
However, she said the matter became public and subjected her to years of criticism, insults and accusations.
Salma said her continued silence did not resolve the situation, as critics continued to make claims about her and question her character.
She noted that the experience eventually changed her approach to dealing with social media criticism.
“I realized it didn’t fix anything because anybody felt they could just wake up and write anything about me, say anything to me,” she said.
According to Salma, she eventually began responding to some of the criticism because she felt the public needed to hear her side of the story rather than rely solely on claims made about her online.
She said after about eight years of dealing with the backlash, she concluded that remaining silent had not protected her reputation or career.
“I felt people need to get to know who I am and what the truth really is and that was how I started,” she added.
