The Minister of Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, remains confident Ghana will qualify for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) despite losing their opening two matches in the qualifiers.

The Black Stars have endured a disappointing start to their campaign, suffering a 2-0 defeat to Ivory Coast in Bouaké before losing 4-2 to The Gambia at the Accra Sports Stadium.

Ghana took a two-goal lead against the Scorpions but failed to hold on, conceding four times to leave them bottom of Group C without a point.

The disappointing results also preceded the departure of head coach Carlos Queiroz, leaving the Ghana Football Association (GFA) and the Ministry of Sports and Recreation to put interim arrangements in place.

Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen, Adams admitted that Ghana’s defeat to The Gambia was difficult to watch but insisted he believes the four-time African champions can turn their fortunes around and secure qualification for the tournament.

“I must admit that nobody would want to be in my situation when the Black Stars played against The Gambia at the Accra Sports Stadium,” he said.

“It was difficult to watch the team lose. I could not believe what happened, but I am convinced the team will qualify for the AFCON tournament,” he added.

The Black Stars will regroup next month for their Matchday Three and Four fixtures against Somalia, with both matches scheduled to be played at the Accra Sports Stadium.

An interim technical team will oversee the squad for the two games, following an announcement by the GFA and the Ministry of Sports and Recreation.

Ghana are seeking a return to the continental showpiece after missing out on the 2025 AFCON in Morocco, where they failed to progress from the qualifying campaign.

The 2027 AFCON finals will be co-hosted by Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania.
