The Births and Deaths Registry (BDR) has marked its 61st anniversary, celebrating more than six decades of contribution to civil registration and vital statistics in Ghana.
Established in 1965 under Act 301, the Registry has over the years played a key role in registering births and deaths and providing vital statistical information for national development.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, September 1, 2026, the Registry said accurate data on births and deaths remains essential for effective national planning, policy formulation, resource allocation and the delivery of public services.
The BDR acknowledged the dedication and sacrifices of past and present staff, management, stakeholders and development partners who have contributed to the growth of the institution.
Among the partners recognised were the Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), UNICEF, the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA), the International Centre for Migration Policy Development (ICMPD), the Ghana Health Service and the Ghana Statistical Service.
The Registry said the anniversary also provides an opportunity to reflect on the changing demands of civil registration and the need for continued modernisation and digitalisation of its services.
It identified improved accessibility, enhanced data quality and stronger collaboration among stakeholders as critical to ensuring that every birth and death in Ghana is properly registered.
The BDR said the milestone is therefore not only a celebration of its achievements but also an opportunity to renew its commitment to building a more efficient, accessible, inclusive and responsive civil registration system.
It extended its congratulations to the management and staff of the Registry, as well as stakeholders and partners supporting its mandate.
The Registry expressed hope that it would continue to evolve with Ghana’s needs and contribute more significantly to national development through accurate, timely and reliable civil registration and vital statistics.
