Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has expressed condolences to the families of the four Kumasi Academy Senior High School students, who died recently as a result of a swine flu outbreak.
The outbreak of the disease was initially thought to be meningitis. But Minister of Health Kwaku Agyemang Manu on Thursday confirmed to journalists that 12 out of 19 blood samples sent to the Noguchi Memorial Research Institute tested positive for Influenza H1N1 also known as Swine Flu.
The deaths of the four students – aside earlier ones in April – caused panic among parents and guardians, some of whom stormed the school to take their wards home.
A three-day vaccination exercise was conducted for all the school children as well as some of the parents who were said to have been on campus.
Vice President Bawumia expressed his condolences to the families of the victims on Twitter. Nineteen students are currently on admission. “I wish those admitted in hospitals a speedy recovery,” the Vice President tweeted.
