The Ministry of the Interior has declared Friday, May 1, 2026, a statutory public holiday in observance of May Day, also known as Workers’ Day.
This was contained in a statement issued on April 27, 2026, and signed by the Interior Minister, Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak. The Ministry called on the general public to duly observe the holiday across the country.
“The general public is hereby informed that Friday, May 1, 2026, marks Workers’ Day (May Day), which is a statutory public holiday and should be observed as such throughout the country,” the statement noted.
May Day is commemorated worldwide to honour the contributions of workers to national development. In Ghana, the day is traditionally marked by parades, speeches from labour leaders and government officials, and engagements focused on workers’ welfare.
The celebration also provides an opportunity for organised labour to engage government on critical issues such as wages, job security, and workplace safety.
