Flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has donated GH¢50,000 to support the activities of St Jude Catholic Church at Weija in the Greater Accra Region.
The donation forms part of Dr Bawumia’s continued support for the church, having previously contributed towards the construction of its church building and an eight-seater washroom facility designed to accommodate persons with disabilities.
Dr Bawumia was honoured during a Holy Mass held to recognise his contributions to the church and subsequently commissioned the newly constructed washroom facility.
During his visit, he also toured the Weija Leprosarium, where he interacted with patients and reaffirmed his commitment to supporting their welfare.
Presenting the GH¢50,000 to the church, Dr Bawumia pledged to continue assisting its activities.
He said his decision to support the church was partly influenced by the work of Rev. Father Andrew Campbell and his commitment to caring for vulnerable people, including the poor, sick, persons affected by leprosy and street children.
“Father Campbell is an extraordinary person. He’s a true man of God, and he cares about the poor, the needy, the hungry, the lepers, the street children, the sick, and this is something I also care deeply about,” he said.
Dr Bawumia said he was pleased to see the church completed after supporting its construction.
Reacting to the donation, Father Andrew Campbell described Dr Bawumia’s support as evidence of his generosity and concern for vulnerable people.
He said Dr Bawumia had demonstrated empathy towards needy and sick persons through his interactions with patients at the leprosarium.
According to him, Dr Bawumia’s willingness to engage directly with the patients, including shaking hands and embracing them, demonstrated his love for humanity.
