The legal battle surrounding embattled Ghanaian socialite Abu Trica has taken another turn after the Accra High Court reportedly cleared the way for his extradition to the United States to face criminal charges.
Reacting to the development, his lawyer, Oliver Barker-Vormawor, disclosed that he was out of the country on work-related duties when news of the ruling reached him.
However, he hinted at plans to escalate the matter to the Supreme Court in a final attempt to halt the extradition process.
“I am out of Ghana for work. I just heard that the case of Abu Trica has been fast-tracked and a judge has just ordered his extradition. Hmmm. FBI 1 – Abu 1. I guess this issue goes to the Supreme Court,” he wrote.
The latest ruling comes in response to a certiorari application seeking to quash the decision of the Gbese District Court, which authorised his extradition in connection with criminal charges in the United States.
The High Court’s decision effectively allows extradition processes to move forward.
Abu Trica is wanted in the United States over an alleged $8 million romance scam and other related cybercriminal offences currently under investigation by American authorities.
The Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) has previously indicated that if convicted, he could face a prison sentence of not less than 20 years.
The case continues to attract attention as legal proceedings move into the country’s highest court.
