Residents of Atonsu Bokro in the Asokwa Municipality of the Ashanti Region are facing severe transportation challenges due to the deplorable state of their inner roads, forcing some young people to carry the elderly and sick on their backs to access healthcare.

The situation has left many vulnerable residents stranded, as vehicles are unable to reach their homes.

According to community members, the inner roads have deteriorated badly and have become virtually impassable, making it extremely difficult for the elderly and sick to travel to health facilities.

Some elderly landlords and other sick residents are currently confined to their homes, unable to seek medical attention because of the poor road network.

Eighty-year-old Madam Lucy Abban, a resident of the area, recounted her ordeal, describing the hardship she endures whenever she needs medical care.

“The poor state of the road is seriously affecting my health. Whenever I need to go to the hospital, no vehicle can reach my house. I depend on strong young men in the community to carry me to a point where I can get a car. We, the elderly here, are suffering. The government should come to our aid,” she lamented.

Some elderly residents in the community are battling various age-related health conditions but are unable to access timely medical care due to the inaccessibility of their homes.

Some of the youth who assist in carrying the sick described the situation as heartbreaking, saying it is distressing to see elderly people being carried on their backs because of poor road infrastructure.

They are therefore calling on authorities, particularly the local assembly, to urgently intervene by grading and rehabilitating the inner roads to ease transportation and reduce health risks in the community.
