Presidential spokesperson, Mustapha Hamid, says government’s decision to reduce electricity tariffs, as captured in the 2018 budget, is not a nine-day wonder.
According to him, the reduction will ease the cost of doing business in the country and also bring relief to Ghanaians.

“The reduction in electricity tariff will indeed affect Ghanaians positively and that is what the Nana Addo government is all about. This move by the government is not father Christmas or a nine-day wonder but real”, he said.
Mustapha Hamid was speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen Wednesday.
Government’s decision to review electricity tariffs by an average of 30 percent took effect from March 15, 2018.

The Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) last month announced a power reduction of 17.5% for residential, 30% for non-residential, 25% for SLTs and 10% for the mines on energy consumption only.
The decision to reduce electricity cost was taken after the PURC held an extensive stakeholder consultation, detailed technical analysis of utility tariff proposals and consideration of inputs and concerns of consumers.
The PURC said the key objectives in the tariff review were “to ensure efficient and equitable tariffs and to ensure that tariffs are relevant to the current socio-economic environment.”

Mr. Hamid is optimistic that government will sustain power supply to attract major strategic investors into the business sector in order to boost Ghanaian businesses.
According to him, this is the first time a government has reduced electricity tariff and therefore President Akufo-Addo should be lauded rather than being attacked.
