A 35-year-old ex-convict who broke his arm working for the prisons as part of his sentence is demanding that the service provides him medical support.
Kwaku Nti fell from the building he was working on as a mason whiles serving a four year prison term for a traffic offence.
Though he has been granted amnesty, Kwaku said he will need an artificial replacement to be able to use his left arm again.
Kwaku’s father abandoned the family when he was two years old.
His mother died when he was eleven and had to take care of himself and his siblings.
At eighteen, he was driving a taxi cab.
He said he was arrested, convicted and sentenced to a four-year-jail term for driving without license following an accident that involved his taxi cab and another car.
He was sentenced to four years in prison but in his third year while working as a mason, he fell from a building and broke his left arm.
Whilst seeking medical attention he says he was granted amnesty.
Speaking to Naa Amerley on Nhyira FM’s Obra magazine programme, Kwaku revealed that doctors say they would have to fix a metal in his arm to make it active again.
According to Kwaku, he cannot raise the one thousand four hundred Ghana cedis needed for the surgery.
Meanwhile, a retired regional police commander, Lawyer Kwaku Opare Addo said the victim should petition the ministry of interior and the prison service to take care of him.
He says since the prisoner got injured in prison, he cannot be granted amnesty without treatment or compensation for injury.
