Statistics from the Mathias Catholic Hospital at Yeji in the Pru District indicates that about eight (8) pregnant women died during child birth as a result of inadequate facilities at the hospital.

Since January 2017 the hospital which serves as referral hospital for about five (5) districts in the Eastern part of Brong Ahafo region has recorded three maternal death cases and five deaths in 2016 which the authorities described it as disturbing.

Some pregnant women in the area also sleep on the floor for medical attention due to inadequate space at the hospital’s maternity ward.

Speaking with Adom News, the Human Resource Manager (HRM) at the Mathias Catholic Hospital, Norbert Apuri said the hospital authorities trying hard to reduce the death this year by intensifying education on importance of pregnant women visiting the hospital after conceding since most of the people are in the farming communities.

Norbert Apuri said the hospital needs an estimated amount of GHc 2.3 million Ghana cedis to put up a new maternity block to prevent such deaths.

He stated that despite donation by the Member of Parliament for Pru East, Dr. Kwabena Donkor to the hospital to commence the project, the Ministry of Health and the district assembly must also do their part.

In a related development, a deputy Director in charge of Nursing Services at Yeji Midwifery Training School, Hannah Yawson says the school project which was started in November 2016 will help to reduce the maternal deaths.

Meanwhile, Dr. Kwabena Donkor who has built some CHIP Compounds and hospital bungalow for the Mathias Catholic Hospital called on government to also assist to improve healthcare in the area.
