The Member of Parliament for Asutifi North in the Ahafo Region, Ebenezer Kwaku Addo, has supported 150 commercial drivers and riders to complete their registration with the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA).
The beneficiaries comprise commercial vehicle drivers, motorbike riders popularly known as okada operators, and tricycle riders, also known as aboboyaa operators, from Kenyasi and Ntotroso.
The MP provided financial assistance to help the beneficiaries regularise their documentation and comply with road traffic regulations.
Speaking to Adom News, Mr Addo said the intervention was necessary because several commercial drivers and riders in the two communities frequently faced arrest over expired or non-existent driving licences.
He explained that whenever such operators were arrested by the police, he was often contacted to intervene on their behalf.
Mr Addo said the situation had become a recurring challenge and required a more sustainable solution to help drivers and riders comply with the law.
According to him, the recurring situation prompted him to engage the DVLA office in Sunyani in the Bono Region to facilitate the registration process for the affected drivers and riders.
He said the initiative was intended to help reduce avoidable arrests while encouraging commercial transport operators to operate in accordance with the law.
Some beneficiaries expressed their appreciation to the MP, describing the initiative as unprecedented in the constituency.
They said although Mr Addo did not cover the entire cost of the registration, his contribution of one-third of the expenses had significantly reduced the financial burden on them.
The beneficiaries said they were grateful for the support and appealed for similar interventions to be sustained.
