The Queen Mother of Akyem Asiakwa in the Abuakwa South Municipality of the Eastern Region, Nana Yaa Fosua Boatemaa III, has urged Ghanaians to join forces to combat illegal mining (galamsey), saying the fight can only be won through collective action.
Speaking to the media during the installation of an Abusuapanin, she called on government, traditional leaders, security agencies, and local communities to work together to protect the country’s environment and natural resources for future generations.
She emphasized that protecting the environment is a shared responsibility and urged all stakeholders to remain committed to the fight against galamsey to ensure a better future for generations to come.
Meanwhile, the newly installed Abusuapanin of Akyem Asiakwa, Baafour Kwabena Antwi Boasiako, called on all residents of the community to come together and contribute to the development of the area.
He also added his voice to the fight against galamsey, appealing to the government and other stakeholders to create alternative employment and livelihood opportunities for the youth. According to him, this would help reduce illegal mining activities and protect the country’s water bodies and forests from further destruction.
